Most of India’s population practices the Hindu religion, one of the oldest known religions dating as far back as 1500 B.C.E. An incredibly diverse religion, Hinduism acknowledges the presence of as many as 330 million images of God, though they believe in One Consciousness. Death, a very important aspect of all religions, is realized in Hinduism as part of samsara – or rebirth. Followers of Hinduism seek to achieve freedom from desire, samsara, and attain Moksha, the release from rebirth and transcendence to the vast beyond.
Because Hindus do not believe in the resurrection of the body, many choose cremation as the most common practice. Once death has occurred, it is seen as impure to touch the body. Water from the Ganges River, considered very pure, is poured into the mouth of the deceased; it a sacred body of water that removes sins and expedites Moksha. A Hindu funeral traditionally takes place as soon as possible, usually by the next day or sometimes within hours. Before the sacred ritual, the family gathers to bathe the deceased, with the head facing south. While washing – either with purified water or mixtures of liquids, the family recites mantras. After this, the hands and toes are tied, the deceased is dressed in a white shroud, and cremation preparations are carried out.
Because of the sacredness of the Ganges River, cremations traditionally take place at this location. A pyre is built by family, with the body placed on it, and the elder relative begins walking counter-clockwise around the pyre, sprinkling water from the Ganges on the body. After three cycles have been made the elder sets the pyre aflame, the cremains collected the following day.
